How to Actually Store Your Luggage (Without It Taking Over Your Space)
Summer travel season is in full swing, which means one thing for a lot of us: suitcases. They come home from a trip, get parked in the hallway "just for now," and somehow still haven't moved three weeks later. Sound familiar?
Luggage is one of those things we don't think about until it's in our way — and with a little planning, it doesn't have to be. Here's how to store it in a way that actually works for your home.
Empty it completely before you store it
This sounds obvious, but it's the step most of us skip. A bag that gets stored with a few forgotten items inside becomes a bag that gets avoided. Take five minutes to fully empty it, wipe it down, and let it air out before it goes anywhere.
Use the space inside your luggage
Luggage takes up space no matter what — so you might as well make it work for you. Store bulky items inside your suitcases: extra pillows, out-of-season blankets, sleeping bags, or even shoes you rarely wear. You're not wasting space; you're doubling it.
Find a dedicated home for it
The key to luggage not becoming clutter is having one intentional spot for it. Great options include:
Under the bed — flat or rolling luggage fits perfectly here
Top shelf of a closet — use a step stool and stack by size
A dedicated closet or storage room — nest smaller bags inside larger ones
High garage shelving — great if you travel only a few times a year
Whatever spot you choose, make it the only spot. That way, it never ends up in the hallway again.
Nest your bags
Store smaller bags inside bigger ones to save room. A carry-on inside a checked bag, a tote tucked into a duffel — nesting keeps everything together and takes up far less space.
One quick midyear check-in
July is a great time to assess what luggage you actually use. If you have a bag you haven't touched in two years, it might be time to donate it. The goal is to keep only what serves you — and let go of the rest.
